Emotion of the Month: Joy – “The Spark in Your Day”

What is Joy?
Joy is a warm, expansive emotion that signals moments of alignment with what nourishes you. It often shows up as lightness, energy, or openness, and it can appear in big life moments or in small, fleeting sparks—a laugh, a smile, a shared glance, or a quiet achievement. In the body, joy may feel like a lift in the chest, tingling in the hands, a lightness in the stomach, or even energy radiating outward. It’s the body and mind telling you, “This feels good; pay attention, savor this.”

Prompt – Noticing Joy in the Moment:
Take a quiet minute and close your eyes. Recall three moments in the past week when you felt joy, no matter how small. Describe each moment in detail: what happened, who was present, and how it made you feel physically and emotionally. Then ask yourself: “What does this moment of joy tell me about my needs, values, or what nourishes me?” Write freely for a paragraph or more, letting the memory and bodily sensations guide your reflection.

Exploration / “Keep the Tea”:
Now take it a step further: imagine joy as a guest at your day-to-day life. Where does it linger, and where do you push it away without noticing? How could you create space to invite more of it—tiny rituals, sights, sounds, or actions? Jot down playful or curious ideas: a song that always lifts you, a small act of self-care, or a gesture to someone else that sparks mutual joy. Notice patterns: are there triggers or barriers to joy you hadn’t recognized before? Reflect on how attending to these moments strengthens your emotional literacy, teaching you to spot, savor, and respond to positive feelings with awareness.

Purpose: Strengthen emotional literacy by learning to recognize, name, and cultivate positive emotions. Joy is a teacher about your needs, values, and what brings nourishment.

Suggested Tool: Joy Journal – track moments of joy, noting sensations, thoughts, and context to spot patterns over time.

Affirmation: “I notice and celebrate the joy in my life, no matter how small.”
